From Recovery to Research - Nikki’s Story
When Nikki walked through the doors of ChooseWell Communities, she couldn’t yet see the full picture of who she would become.
Today, she is a December 2024 graduate of ChooseWell Communities, a proud mother to her daughter Lucy, and a Clinical Logistics Specialist at Genentech in Louisville, Kentucky — playing a critical role in advancing healthcare research across the country.
But her greatest transformation didn’t begin with a job offer. It began with confidence.
During her time at ChooseWell, Nikki says the biggest change she experienced was learning to be more confident in who she is as a person — becoming comfortable being okay with herself. If she could go back and speak to herself on day one, she knows exactly what she would say: “Stick with it. Keep going.” Simple words. Powerful truth. That mindset continues to guide her today.
In her role at Genentech, she serves as the systems master expert for clinical inbound products. She also picks, packs, and ships materials for clinical trials across the globe! Her work ensures that healthcare providers receive the products and supplies they need to conduct medical research safely and efficiently.
Her work helps collect research that advances healthcare — contributing to treatments and outcomes that will help countless people live healthier lives.
For Nikki, this job represents something deeply personal.
“It’s the first real job I’ve had because it’s a career,” she shares.
Even more meaningful is the environment she works in. Nikki is surrounded by a supportive team who knows her story and her history — and welcomed her back with open arms. Her team is what makes her most proud. That sense of belonging matters.
Outside of work, Nikki treasures her time with Lucy. When she isn’t being a mom, she enjoys crafting, going to the movies, reading, and attending 12-step meetings — practices that help her stay grounded and connected in recovery.
When asked what she would say to someone who feels stuck right now, Nikki doesn’t hesitate:
“Breathe and keep going. It WILL work out. Reach out. Call someone. Keep going.”
It’s the same message she would give her former self. And, it’s a message that reflects exactly what ChooseWell Communities strives to cultivate — resilience, community, and the courage to stay the course.
Nikki’s story is a reminder that recovery doesn’t just restore what was lost. It builds something new. Something stronger. A career. A community. A legacy.
We are so proud of you, Nikki!
