Two CWC Proposals Recommended for Louisville’s Opioid Settlement Funding

In a fun, unexpected addition to the program, Executive Director Leigh Ann Yost was recognized as this week's Louisvillian Doing Good! We're so proud of her!

On Tuesday, April 16, in a press conference held at the ChooseWell Communities offices, Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the proposed recipients of the second round of opioid settlement funding.

ChooseWell Communities is honored to be among the 20 organizations selected!

These funds will allow us directly affect the lives of more Louisville families, helping to ensure they receive access to the housing, resources and support that enable them to raise their children in safe, healthy, and drug-free homes.

The Details

In 2023, Louisville Metro Government began receiving funds as part of a $57 million settlement agreement with opioid manufacturers and distributors for their role in fueling the opioid epidemic. Over the next 18 years, these funds will be awarded to programs that focus on prevention, harm reduction, treatment, recovery, and wrap-around support services for those most affected.

ChooseWell received two grants for the period of July 2024 through December 2025:

Housing Expansion Grant

This grant allows ChooseWell to expand its unique, family-centered housing model to 40 additional Jefferson County families with children under age 5. The program offers safe, stable housing alongside long-term recovery support and reunification services. With this grant, CWC will:

  • Anchor 40 more families in permanent housing through HUD/Louisville Metro Housing Authority Moving to Work vouchers

  • Accelerate family reunification and custody preservation efforts

  • Pilot technology to track clinical outcomes and recovery progress

  • Build a robust population for potential academic and research partnerships

  • Strengthen long-term sustainability through strategic partnerships and new funding sources

Workforce Development Grant – KYnship Works

ChooseWell’s second grant supports KYnship Works, a 12-week supported employment program designed for parents in early recovery with young children. The initiative helps participants build in-demand skills in environments that respect both parenting and recovery needs. With this support, CWC will:

  • Equip 30 parents in Year 1 with job-readiness skills and recovery-supportive employment pathways

  • Reduce the likelihood of return to low-wage jobs that conflict with family and recovery priorities

  • Strengthen family stability and children’s well-being by improving household income and recovery capital

  • Inspire broader collaboration across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors

Why It Matters

These grants affirm ChooseWell’s growing reputation for developing innovative, family-first solutions to long-standing challenges related to addiction, poverty, and housing instability. At the heart of ChooseWell’s mission is a simple yet transformative belief: No parent should have to choose between their recovery and their child. These investments bring us one step closer to making Louisville a national model for healing and hope.

As excited as we are to be recognized, this investment in ChooseWell Communities requires a lot of growth in a very short time period, and we can't do it without your support!
